Why a standard gives a range and not an answer

This is the single most misunderstood thing about workstation ergonomics. The standards are written for furniture designers and specifiers, and their job is to define adjustment ranges that accommodate most of a population. They are not written to tell one person their correct desk height, and they do not contain that number.

That is why this site separates published figures from rules of thumb so insistently. The multipliers below are conventions. They are reasonable starting points, and they assume your limb proportions are average for your height, which for a great many people they are not. Two people at the same stature can want desk heights an inch or more apart, and both are correct.

Joint angles, which matter more than any measurement

Reading a chair certification claim

"BIFMA certified" on its own tells you very little, because it does not say which test. X5.1 covers general purpose office chairs. X5.11 is a separate standard for large occupant seating with its own requirements, and a chair tested to X5.1 has not met it. A stated capacity with no test reference behind it is a marketing number rather than a result.

A load rating is also a structural result and not a fit statement. It says the chair survived defined load, impact and stability tests. It says nothing about whether the seat is wide enough or the pan the right depth, and for larger users those dimensions are more often the limiting factor than strength is.
